The NIC Bank sponsored T20 Cricket tournament took off to a flying start as Mombasa Sports Club looked set to take the lead from the onset. Playing two games on the first weekend, Sports Club out played Mombasa Jaffery who chose to field on the toss. Yusuf Bakirali (58) and Sagar Karia (30) laid into the bowling attack with Mujahid Kalyan (2/39) at 12 runs an over the only successful campaigner against the Sports Club onslaught. With 20 runs extra awarded for slow over rate, Sports Club closed their 20 overs at 160/4. In reply, Mombasa Jaffery batsmen walked to and fro between wicket and pavilion as wickets fell like the proverbial nine pins. Regan Ochola (42) the saving grace taking Jaffery to 87 all out in 18 overs. Vishal Shikotra 3/23 and Dev Hirani 2/19 bowling them out with devastating accuracy.
Playing Mombasa Simba the next day, Sports Club elected to bat with Nilay Thakkar (76) and Sagar Karia (45) once again taking the side to 178/3 in 20 overs. Satpal Singh Gatora (2/31) the only successful campaigner against the destructive sports club attack. In reply, Mombasa Simba batsmen emulated the Jaffery players by walking to and fro between crease and pavilion as Dev Hirani (2/10) and Bhavya Thakkar (2/14) destroyed the batting with Simba managing 67 runs on the back of Satpal Singh Gatora’s 23. Both victories giving sports club a much needed lead with points and run rate to secure the first position.
In the third game of the NIC Bank T20 series, Burhani Sports Club played like lions having won the toss and elected to field. Shree Cutchi Leva whose batting has always struggled, managed a paltry 92 runs with 5 balls to spare as Kartik Pindoria (29) tried valiantly to stand his ground. However, man of the match Mohammed Dadabhai show cased his brilliant skills as he bowled his 4 overs taking 4/17. In reply, Idris and Taha Firoz Yusufali (30 and 33 respectively) made T20 look like child’s play as they reached the target with 7 overs to spare. The Shree Cutchi Leva bowling not having enough to defend the honour of their side.
