CCA 40 OVER LEAGUE STARTS WITH A TWIST....
The 2014/2015 cricket season in Mombasa is set for some twists and turns as Paresh J Bhudia of SCLPS’s all round performance with bat and ball took SCLPS onto the top of the table, something that has seldom been seen in a Mombasa Sports Club dominated sport.
Last Sunday, Burhani Sports Club lost the toss and were put in to bat by Shree Cutchi Leva who managed to restrict Burhani to a decent score of 191 for 5 in the allotted overs. Yusuf Hussein’s handsome 70* and Idris Yusufali’s 40 showing a resilience against the accurate Cutchi bowling. However, the score was not enough as SCLP’s overhauled the target with over 8 overs to spare as Paresh Bhudia having claimed 2 wickets earlier went to town demolishing the Burhani bowling and posting 108 not out as Yusuf Hussein took two wickets from the other end to try and slow down the barrage of runs.
Former cricket powerhouse Mombasa Jaffery started their campaign on a sour note as hosts Mombasa Sports Club put them in to bat. Even with Kenyan cap, Steve Tikolo’s beautiful 51, the lack of support from the other end saw MJSC capitulate for 169 with 6 overs gone to waste. Mohamed Fazel flashed his way to 37 succumbing to Ammar Kaderbhouy who also claimed the scalp of Steve Tikolo in his 8 over spell (3/42) with the ever reliable Taaha Suleimanji claiming 5/33. In reply, MSC lost 5 early wickets before skipper ZahirAbbas and Taaha Suleimanji steadied the ship to gain victory with a couple of overs spare. Zuheir Ladak claiming 3/27.
It was runs galore as Mombasa Heats took on Mombasa Simba B in Nyali where having won the toss, Simba opted to bat against the stump to stump bowling of Heats. Satpal Singh’s 73 and Jasmer singh’s 43 took the scores to 262 for 5 at end of innings with Jeremy Fernandes and Peter Mines bagging 2 wickets a piece. But it was the second innings that saw even greater fireworks as Jeremy Fernandes (98) and Jimmy Kamande (82) with Tim Jenz (51) took the game away as Satpal and Sukhraj Singh tried to put the brakes with 2 wickets a piece. Mombasa Heats secured 2nd place with their quick fire batting.
Not to be outdone in the run machine league, Coast Gymkhana riding on Sanjay Patel’s 100 against Simba A posted 241 for 6 with Sanjay having retired midway through his innings. Jasmeet Bhuller the lone bowler managing to snap 2 wickets to slow the pace down. In reply, Simba A’s lack lustre batting failed to keep up with the runs as young Harajsingh Sohal picked 3/16 in his 8 overs Simba losing all their wickets for a paltry 148.
This is a league that may turn things round in the coast cricket scene as three teams Gymkhana, Heats and SCLPS show firm intent to grab the title from the All round performing Mombasa Club side. Perhaps a rejuvenation of sorts as the battle for the title has just begun.
