40 over League draws to a close as T20 Takes off with bang....

The 40 over league 2013/14 is drawing to a conclusion with one game to go between Burhani and Heats with the standings on the table likely to undergo just one change. As has been the case for the last couple or more years, Mombasa Sports Club retained the title with Mombasa Jaffery coming second as Shree Cutchi Leva settle for the 3rd slot. At fourth Coast Gymkhana who have shown tremendous promise in the last three of their matches winning them comprehensively albeit a little too late in the series.

Also making a turn-about are Mombasa heats who, if victorious against Burhani will move to the 5th slot displacing Simba who have shown rare sparks of brilliance especially in a game against Shree Cutchi where SCLPS was ousted for just 69 runs. Mombasa Heats vanquished Simba last Sunday in the return match of the league taking the much needed 2 points and now eye simba’s slot on the table. Burhani Sports club have struggled throughout the series with the team lacking the joint effort needed in winning a match, some individual brilliant performances on the field but on the whole it is time for them to reflect as a unit on the ground.

As we make into the Mombasa Jaffery Sponsored T20 ZAHRA Cup, the sponsors lost their first game to Mombasa Sports Club on the 2nd of Feb in what should have been a victory for the sponsors. Poor fielding and dropped chances saw Sports Club chase the 138 run target in just under 18 overs with Yusuf Bakerali posting 63 runs and Sagar Karia 32*. Mombasa Jaffery had earlier relied on Mohamed Fazel (29) and Juma Abbas (31) to set the target which was 30 runs shy of the required score to make a game of it in the end.

In the second match of the T20, Santosh Kumar (36) and Amir Kumar (40) took Mombasa Simba to 163 runs in their 20 overs with Burhani’s Murtaza Zafferali picking 4/20 in a brilliant 4 over spell. In reply, Burhani managed only 158 falling six runs short of victory as Idris Yusufali (44) and Yusuf Hussein (45) batted with brilliance to try and take their team to victory. In the end, Mombasa Simba riding on JAsmeet Singh Bhuller’s brilliant bowling won the match by a whisker’s breath.

This weekend, Coast Gymkhana will try to upstage Mombasa Simba at the Burhani grounds in the T20 format whilst at Coast Gymkhana, Heats take on Burhani to conclude the 40 over league 2013/14 league. With plenty more cricket to come in the coming weeks and months, the local teams prepare themselves to battle it out with bat and bowl as the 20 over format promises some big hitting and sharp bowling for all the cricket fans on the island.
