Veterans Baba Juma & Fazel lift Jaffery Sports Club to No 2.

Former Kenyan under 19 player B.J. (Juma Abbas – Baba Juma) leapt to the top of the bowling and batting charts with his sterling performance in the last two games.

The weekend of 24th November saw Jaffery S.C take on Burhani at Burhani as MSC’s match against Coast Gymkhana got rained off awarding a point each to both sides.

Burhani won the toss and elected to field, emboldened with their Kenyan prospects Ken Owino and Paul Anjara back in the side. However, the presence of the duo made no difference as Mujtaba Walji (34) and Mohamed Fazel (18) took the scores to 56 for no loss before Yusuf Hussein (2/38) and Shaffiq Alibhai (2/33) struck vital blows to slow the scoring rate. A well executed 40 not out by Juma Abbas aka Baba Juma and 47 not out by Ahmed Virjee together with Mohamed Kalyan (20) and Mazhar Kanani (23) saw the scores reach 221 in the allotted overs. Murtaza Zafferali (2/31) also getting into the action. In reply, Idris Yusufali (40) and Yusuf Hussein (36) took Burhani to 87 for one before the twin spin duo of Juma Abbas (5/18) and Alijawad Karim (3/28) ripped through the batting line-up and Burhani collapsed to 123 all out with 11 overs to go.

Last weekend, the only fixture on the cards was the contest for 2nd slot on the table as Shree Cutchi Leva Patel and Mombasa Jaffery locked horns to secure a berth behind Sports Club with both teams having three games in hand before the match. Winning the toss and putting the opposition in, Mombasa Jaffery made early inroads into the SCLPS batting line-up as Muhammed Kalyan bowled a brilliant 4/31 and GulamAbbas Kassam (2/32) applied the brakes to Paresh Gami’s (49) patient knock to bring SCLPS down, 109/7 in the first 30 overs. Thereafter, a hefty 67 run partnership between Manish Vekaria (27*) and Kishan Halai (40*) took the scores to 176 in the allotted overs. Had the SCLPS bowlers worked to potential, it may have been a fight to the end but instead, Mujtaba Walji’s blistering 31 set the pace for the run chase although Kushal Varshani (2/40) took early wickets to give Mombasa Jaffery cause for concern at 45 for 3, some masterful batting by Mohamed Fazel (79*) and BJ (Juma Abbas) (39*) took Jaffery home in 23.2 overs.

Mombasa Jaffery host Mombasa Sports Club at Burhani with both teams sitting pretty at the top of the table as Mombasa Simba host Burhani at Coast Gymkhana grounds in a match that could see Simba move up the ladder to 5th position and within striking distance of the 4th position. Three teams, Simba, Gymkhana and Heats in contention for the 4th slot with ample games in hand to tilt the fortunes in their favour.
